Looking for ideas... [Apr. 22nd, 2002|03:09 pm]
Kurt Onstad
I'm going to sing a song Thursday. I'm looking for something that:

1) Tells a story.
2) Has a happy ending.
3) Is in my range. (I'm in the lower range of tenors, if you haven't heard me sing.)
4) Preferably, has a knight in it.

And no, "Brave Sir Robin" does not work.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Are we to assume it need be set in a period appropriate to having a knight in it?

Not necessarily

But, the lyrics shouldn't contain any obvious anachronisms for that approximate time. It could be a song that musically never would have happened back then, but as long as it doesn't mention cars and computers and such, it's fine...

For some reason "Screaming in The Night" by Krokus came to mind, but I don't believe there's a knight in it. There is a reference to a rowan tree, however.

Yeah, I know, I'm a big help.

You're runnin' low on time

You got an e-mail with a few suggestions yesterday. Did you check 'em out? Any good ones?

Yes. Only one problem...

I can't find an MP3 of Stan Rogers performing "Witch of the Westmorland" in order for me to listen to and memorize in time. (That might change tonight, if I get a page when I'm over at your house. You don't mind burning a CD for me, right? :) )

well, for future reference.... can be sung in e minor as a tenor part.

THE VAGABOND
by Ralph Von Williams

Give to me the life I love, let the lave go by me
Give the jolly heaven above, and the byway nigh me
Bed in the bush with stars to see, bread I dip in the river
There's the life for a man like me, there's the life forever

Let the blow fall soon or late, let what will be o'er me
Give the face of earth around, and the road before me
Wealth I ask not hope nor love, nor a friend to know me
All I ask the heaven above, and the road below me

Or let autumn fall on me, where a field I linger
Silencing the bird on tree, biting the blue finger
White as meal the frosty fields, cold the fire side haven
Not to autumn will I yield, not to winter even!

Let the blow fall soon or late, let what will be o'er me
Give the face of Earth around, and the road before me
Wealth I seek not hope nor love, nor a friend to know me
All I seek the heaven above, and the road below me

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind

I'll be having many opportunities to sing again for this group, so a repetoire (sp?) of appropriate tunes will be helpful. Thanks again to everyone. I appreciate the assistance.
