So, three and a half days spent with Mom and Dad. As most anyone who knows me can tell you, that's more time than I usually like to spend with my parents, by about...three days. It's not that I hate my parents (not anymore...). But, we have such different interests and opinions on things, that it's very difficult to find subjects that don't lead to arguments of some sort. Especially between my mom and myself. So, we ended up talking about the weather a lot (It was hot and fairly humid...). Let's see, what else did we do? Well, Monday afternoon, we tried to find a movie we could all agree on. The compromise decision we came to eventually was "Freaky Friday," which is a light, fluffy movie, but fun if you accept that fact. I tried to get them to see "Finding Nemo" instead (it's a much better movie overall), but neither of my parents are willing to see an animated movie. (Other attempted movies: The Italian Job [Mom doesn't like caper flicks], American Splendor [too far away...], and Pirates of the Carribean [no explanation, just flat refusal...]).
Tuesday afternoon was spent at the doctor's office, as Mom had an appointment for her final check before her face lift on Thursday. Yep, after the nose job, eye tuck and laser dermabrasion, she finally decided to go for the full brow and neck lift...Tuesday night we spent playing "Screw Your Neighbor" (a card game) with a couple my parents are friends with. Nice people, although it was very odd hearing my parents being referred to as "Skippy" and "Susie." (They both hate the nicknames, but can't get this woman to stop using them...)
Speaking of nicknames, ten years after becoming Kurt, and my parents still refer to me as Dave in all instances except for when I'm around, which is why there's a perceptible pause before they call me by name. "So, what do you want for lunch..........Kurt?" (And Mom still can't get the condescension out of her voice when she calls me Kurt. Grrrrr.)
Continuing on...Wednesday afternoon, Ted and Donna, a couple that Mom and Dad knew in Ventura who now live in Arizona came over to visit. It was good to see them, although I think Ted might be starting to get senile. After seeing Ted and Donna, we had dinner and then rented a movie. With a larger selection, we were able to come up with a movie that we all wanted to see and hadn't yet: The Good Girl. At least, that's what we thought. As soon as the DVD was in and the menu came up, Dad says, "I think we saw this." Sure enough, they had already seen it. So, they watched it again, and I watched it for the first time. (I also rented Catch Me If You Can, and watched that after they went to bed, since they had already seen it, and could remember seeing it the first time...).
So, that's my week in a nutshell. Steered clear of controversial subjects (like the fact that I think my mom is making a mistake by getting a face lift...), and things remained reasonably calm the entire time. Yay! And next time I see them, they'll be nice and distracted by their first grandchild. (Denise should be bursting around the 25th of this month...)
