That...helped? [Jun. 11th, 2002|01:53 pm]

I went to Matt and Michaela's yesterday, to get the first of many massages, in order for them to pay me back for renting my car for seven months last year. I arrive at their apartment, and find that Michaela is a little sick, and isn't up for a full massage today, but she does offer to work on my neck some after I mention how badly I messed it up at the wedding.

She ends up spending 45 minutes on one side of my neck, getting out various knots and such. It was absolute torture during this. She pretty used whatever was necessary to work out the tension, including elbows and forearms. Once she was finished, I felt pretty good. Then I woke up today, and that side of my neck is sore, and doesn't like moving again...I wonder if getting these on a more regular basis will make that better...

Some, yeah.

Did she happen to tell you to drink lots of water? Did you happen to drink lots of water regardless of what advise you were given?

Here's what I've heard: Big ugly knots in your muscles are partially held there by acids. Deep tissue massages release those acids from the muscles into your system. Drinking lots of water flushes those acids from your system.

NOT drinking lots of water allows those acids to slowly sink back into your muscles and cause big ugly knots to reappear.

If she worked on your back for 45 minutes and forgot to tell you to drink a lot of water, she was missing out on a major part of her job. Unless her job is to get repeat customers...

Does it help that I drank lots of water before the massage?

Re: Oops...

You drank a lot of water BEFORE what you expected to be a FULL BODY massage??? She massages in the right (or wrong as the case maybe) place and BINGO, you're a lawn fountain.
no no no... next time, drink lots of water afterward.

Not quite how it worked...

She told me she couldn't do the massage, then offered me a drink. I took water, and drank quite a bit while we chatted, then she offered the neck massage...I'm not quite as stupid as I made it sound.

Yeah, that should help. Ideal would probably be both before and after, but you're probably in better shape than you could have been...
