I've got an Um... [Aug. 4th, 2002|01:18 pm]

Which is one way of saying I've got a girlfriend, but neither of us are quite ready to commit to that terminology yet...(There's a story with how the term "Um" came about, but this post is long enough as it is...)

I'm kind of tired, so as is usually the case when I'm worn out, I'll try to deal with things chronologically, but they'll probably be more stream of consciousness than normal.

As I mentioned earlier, yesterday was the day I had my birthday party. I woke up to the sound of the phone ringing, and answered it. Mom and Dad decided to call, and wish me an early happy birthday. They're still up in Alaska (which is a large part of the reason I decided to throw the party in the first place, since I didn't have to co-celebrate with the family...) I caught them up on what was going on with me, and mentioned Amy. Mom was obviously very confused about who I was talking about, because she asked, "She's the one who's married with a kid, right?" (I think she was thinking of Mary Kate, who is married and pregnant, which I probably mentioned to them after the reunion...) I corrected Mom on Amy's martial status (single, no kids...) and explained about her driving down for the party, as well as my plans to drive up there the next weekend that we're both available (looking like early September).

Finished up the cleaning that needed to get done before the party (my bathroom is no longer something to be ashamed of, although my bedroom still is. But, I have plans for that, because I'd like to be able to show it to Amy someday...) Around 3:00, Amy showed up. We hung out and talked for a little bit, and she met Reed, my roommate. We both were really hungry, and hadn't had lunch, so we went down to Uptown Whittier and had lunch there. Then we went back to my place, where the first people were just arriving for my party. Oh yeah, people were bringing food. Oops.

Most everyone arrived sometime between 5 and 6. It was Amy & myself, Reed (of course), John & Michelle, Josh, Fred & Lisa (and kids), and Tom & Cindy for the first hour or so. Other people trickled in, including Megan (yes, the first one mentioned near the very beginning of this journal), James & Jody, Anne & Chet, Joel (who was for some reason mistaken about the time things started), and Farqhuar (a very pleasant suprise, since his drive time down was even longer than Amy's...) A good time was had by pretty much all. The people who enjoy drinking enjoyed drinking while the rest of us generally socialized. Later, I got alcohol dumped on me (like five full glasses of various alcoholic drinks after I was half-dragged to the shower), then after I showered (for future reference, alcohol in the eyes is painful...) and changed clothes, we all played games together, including Planet Hollywood and Battle of the Sexes (the women won that one, at least partially due to incredible luck on getting the easier questions in the deck). The party started winding down after that, with a few people playing Lunch Money, and others hanging out and talking. Around 1:30am, I kicked people out, as 1) I saw one or two people starting to nod off, including Reed 2) I had to work the next morning and 3) I wanted to spend at least a little alone time with Amy before she completely konked out...After much debate over whether Fred was okay to drive (he had stopped drinking over two hours ago, and is a huge guy who can handle his liquor. He was fine...), the last remaining people left, leaving Amy, Reed and I. Reed went to sleep soon after, and Amy and I hung out together, talking and making out (mostly that second one by this point) before she went to sleep on the couch, and I went to my bed.

On the subject of making out, I got one "PDA Rant!" from Joel, which most likely I deserved as Amy and I kissed in front of Joel (and the rest of the party, but he was the only one paying attention at the time...) for 15 seconds straight or so. Amy, showing exactly how evilly she thinks (and thus, how good of a match she is for me), after being explained about the PDA Rant thing, immediately leans in for another session of deep kissing, leaving me to go, "Ack! Promised I would back off to make people comfortable, but Damn..." and Joel to crack up. I stuck to my promise, for the most part, though. The only other longish make-out with Amy at the party was thanking her for the birthday gift she gave me. (She was the only one who got me a gift at the party, which was good, since I had requested no gifts...) Joel even said, "I can't complain about the thank you kiss..."

On the good signs front, Amy mentioning multiple times liking my friends. She said they were "weird," which is an apt description, and the fact that she likes weird is a good thing...A few of the people at the party, specifically Joel and Tom that I recall, made it clear that they also feel Amy is a good mesh, both with me and the group.

The next morning, Amy and I made out, had breakfast, made out, talked, made out, got threatened with a hosing down from Reed, and talked and made out for about an hour or so after Reed left. Finally, it was time for me to take a quick shower and go to work, and for her to drive back up home, and have lunch with her dad. During the party last night, we went over our various schedules and, since it appears that the field exercise will be happening immediately after the weekend that was most likely to be the time I could go up and visit her, so that doesn't work out. The next weekend that we're both currently available seems to be August 30th-Sept. 1st. Not that far away, but still almost a month...Considering some of my relationships haven't lasted that long, it seems like a while to go without seeing each other. But, we'll call each other quite a bit. She's got 3000 anytime minutes calling anywhere in CA on her cel phone plan, so that will make it cheaper to stay in contact, since she doesn't have internet access (Grrr...)

But, Amy is very happy to be my Um and vice-versa, and we're both looking forward to exploring this relationship further and hopefully continue past the Um phase into something a little more definite. So, overall, good things happening there. Yay!
